A preview screening of Ken Burns, Lynn Novick & Sarah Botstein’s “The U.S. and the Holocaust” – plus a local documentary and talk from MHCE.

Ken Burns and his award-winning colleagues have been making documentaries about America for the past 40 years. Their next film is one of their most important: chronicling one of the greatest humanitarian crises in history and the starkest reckonings for our nation.

Join Kansas City PBS and the Midwest Holocaust Center for Education for a preview screening of The U.S. and the Holocaust, A film by Ken Burns, Lynn Novick & Sarah Botstein, airing on Kansas City PBS this September.

Dr. Shelly M. Cline, Historian for the Midwest Center for Holocaust Education, will provide insight and further illuminate the United States’ position during this time, and how the Holocaust affected Jewish people throughout the world.

In addition, audiences will be able to enjoy a screening of Kansas City PBS’ award-winning documentary All These Delicate Sorrows from Brad Austin, which tells the stories of Holocaust survivors who immigrated to the U.S. and settled in KC.

Dr. Shelly M. Cline is the Historian and Director of Education at the Midwest Center for Holocaust Education in Overland Park KS. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Kansas. Her research focuses on the SS Aufseherinnen in the concentration camp system and the gendered perpetration of the Holocaust. Her research has been supported by grants from the University of Kansas and the Universität Hamburg. She has presented at national and international conferences. Dr. Cline has served on the faculties of the Kansas City Art Institute and the University of Missouri Kansas City, and currently teaches for the Jewish Studies Program at the University of Kansas.

We Are Latinos explores the stories, hopes and accomplishments of the vibrant — and underappreciated — Kansas City Latino community. The broad experiences of Latino artists, athletes, entrepreneurs, immigrants and proud Americans unfolds in this cinematic short documentary series.

According to the Pew Research Center, Generation Z (those born between 1997 and 2012) the most racially and ethnically diverse generation is on track to be the most well-educated generation. From racial equity to climate change, Generation Z’s views could have a big impact on the future of our nation’s political landscape. With this generation making up at least one tenth of the electorate, what motivates some Gen Z-ers to be politically active while others choose a different path to civic engagement?

Join the Kansas City Media Collective on October 25th as we explore the political engagement of Generation Z! This is the second event in our series of community conversations that seek to bring journalism and community together.

One of the foremost songwriters of the 20th century, Billy Joel’s music is beloved around the world. This show celebrates the songs and the style of Billy Joel, evoking the energy and passion of live performances in his 70s/80s pomp.
