Womontown Screening & Panel Discussion @ Kansas City Museum
Mar 10 @ 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm
Womontown Screening & Panel Discussion @ Kansas City Museum | Kansas City | Missouri | United States

Join Kansas City PBS and the Kansas City Museum for a panel with founding members of Womontown, as well as a screening of the 30-minute documentary before it premieres on Channel 19.1.

Kansas City PBS presents Womontown, a new documentary from producer Sandy Woodson about a group of women in 1980s and 90s Kansas City who defied gender norms, transforming 14 city blocks in the Longfellow neighborhood into a revolutionary community by and for women.

In 1980s and 90s Kansas City, Drea Nedelsky and her girlfriend, Mary Ann Hopper, imagined a neighborhood where women could walk hand-in-hand down the street without the judgments and fear. After purchasing a home in the Longfellow Neighborhood they launched a nationalized, grassroots recruiting campaign, reaching out to queer women, selling them on the dream of Womontown, spelled in such a way to entirely remove the mention of “man”. Within five years, 75 women purchased 28 homes and 14 apartment buildings in a 7×7 block area in midtown with their life savings or loans from family members, renovating the properties and creating a home.

Once settled, the women mobilized, electing residents to the neighborhood association to work from the inside to create a secure and supportive environment. They utilized programs available through the city to offset the cost of renovations. Rather than selling and ultimately gentrifying the neighborhood, they put down roots and hoped for something larger.

Womontown premieres Thursday, March 17 at 7:30 p.m. on Channel 19.1.

Free. Space is limited. RSVP required.

KCPBS’ Raising Readers Presents: When Do Multicultural Young Children First Experience Prejudice and Racial Issues? @ Virtual Event
Mar 31 @ 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm

Kansas clock hours are pending.

Although we strive for diversity and inclusion in our current day nation and world – racism, and prejudices still plague us heavily. Our nation is still steeped in negative beliefs, mindsets, and actions that stagnate progress and growth amongst humankind. These relationships between different ethnicities and cultures continue to suffer. But most importantly, how does this continued dedication to separatism and biases affect young children? How does it affect their social/emotional and physical development and overall school life? This workshop will dig deep to find answers to these questions while offering research-based analogies and education, life experience testimonies while discussing what we all can do to create a culturally competent life for children that is built on equity, inclusion, objectivity, and love.

KCPBS' Raising Readers: Growth Mindset in the Early Childhood Setting @ Virtual

What is a growth mindset?

In this workshop, we’ll define the difference between a fixed and a growth mindset, understand why it’s important, and learn how to implement a growth mindset in the Early Childhood setting. We’ll also take a look at your own mindset (language and interactions) to discover how it affects the children in your care and explore resources to support developing a growth mindset as a professional in early care and education.
